Vastu is derived from the word “Vastavikta” which mean the TRUTH. It is an ancient Eight-Thousand-Year-old Vedic science of Architecture and Design. The classic Epics of Ramayana & Mahabharata contain mention of Vastu.

So simplistically speaking, Vastu Shastra is the science of creating Buildings that favorably enhance those elements which bring us H, H, W, R, P & E. Principles of Vastu:
- 4 Levels: Vastu operates on the 4-level philosophy starting from the broadest aspect to the most subtle aspect.
- Plot level – This level talks about the broadest aspect of Vastu ie. the Plot of Land related to the Shape, Slope, Quality, Type, Soil, including placement of the Building within the plot etc
- Building-spaces level – Once the Plot is chosen & the building is being planned we have to freeze the required spaces like position of Bed room, Kitchen, CEO Office, Sales Dept, Accounts section, Store, LT Panel Room, Toilets etc.
- Inner Utilities placement level – Then comes the matter of internal arrangements or the placement of Furniture, Mirrors, Clocks, Sink, Gas Stove, Refrigerator, Almirahs, Study Table, Computer etc. inside the different spaces.
- Facing favourable directions – This is much more subtle aspect. This includes matters like – which side to face while praying, cooking (prasad & general cooking), eating, sleeping (including which side of the bed is ideal for husband & wife).
- Gunas, Elements & their Attributes
Vastu uses the 3 GUNAS for marking spaces. Satvik Guna is ascribed to the NE Zone. The SE & NW Zones represent the Rajasik Guna. The SW Zone is representing the Tamas Guna.
Similarly, the five ELEMENTS — Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space — each representing different planets & energies is attributed to a specific space within the Vastu structure. A harmonious balance of these elements within a space is believed to create positive vibrations and enhance overall prosperity.
- Directional Influence: Vastu considers the orientation of a building and its rooms in relation to the cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) and their associated energies. These directions are important since E-W is related to the Sun’s daily Path, while N-S are the Earth’s Magnetic Poles. The Cross sections of the Cardinal Directions ie. The sub directions – NE, SE, SW & NW are equally important. Since there are 8 cardinal & sub directions, each direction is represented by the 8 Astrological Planets, establishing a clear link between Astrology & Vastu
- Energy Flow: Vastu emphasizes the importance of unobstructed energy flow, known as “prana,” throughout a space. Blocked energy can lead to stagnation and disharmony, while free-flowing energy promotes vitality and positivity.
